The story behind "Young woman cleaning fish, Rio Napo, Peru"

The Rio Napo is one of the main tributaries of the Amazon river and merges with it in Peru. It is one of the more obscure and adventurous ways of travelling between Peru and Ecuador. There are a few small communities along the river, but any real city is weeks away by canoo and still many days with motorized boats.

This young woman allowed us to stay in her house when we we had t0o stop slowly boating up the river during our 5 day pekepeke trip upriver as darkness came and the Rio Napo is know for its hidden sandbanks. We pitched our tent inside to avoid mosquitoes and watched her clean her daily meal of fish, freshly caught in the passing river.

What you see in the image is most of the house. Taken from outside, you can see the only one room, with the other door – actually only wooden stairs leading up to the simple opening- in the back. This is the kitchen, living room and bedroom in one for her, her husband and her child and the only possessions are some basic kitchen tools, a mosquito net and of course a hammock.
